The molecular ecology of two gerbil species across South Africa: Insights from mitochondrial and nuclear markers

(with Dr Sasha Hoffmann and Prof. Claudine Montgelard)

Lindi’s research looks at understanding the drivers of genetic diversity in selected small mammal species (the Bushveld and Highveld gerbils) across multiple spatial and temporal scales, and to place the findings into a conservation management framework. Small mammals are often undervalued as indicators of ecosystem health as they lack the charismatic nature of larger mammals. However, small mammals play a key role in food webs, and their densities in turn determine the densities of the small and meso-predators that feed on them. Lindi’s findings will provide information that could aid reserve management and planning.
