Using DNA barcoding to assess the prevalence of avian malaria in White-backed vultures (Gyps africanus)

(with Dr Sandi Willows-Munro and BirdlifeSA)

Rynhardt will be extracting DNA from White-backed vultures which will be amplified with avian malaria-specific primers. He will then assess whether avian malaria is present in White-backed vultures, and if so, will determine the proportion of the population that is infected. He will also look at which strains (genera and species) are responsible for avian malaria and whether these may be species/host-specific.
